The applicator (2) has a body (8) and an application unit (6) for applying substance on a surface (12). A movable stop (4) is provided on the body and supported against an edge (10) of the surface, where the stop guides the applicator along the edge. The stop is mounted to move so as to be released from function of guiding against the edge. The stop is mounted to move away from the surface until a retracted position with respect to an end of the unit. The stop moves in translation according to a direction perpendicular to the surface or in rotation along an axis parallel to the surface. An independent claim is also included for a method for applying substance on a surface by using an applicator.
