The method involves determining light distribution of a portion of an image of an environment. The image is captured by a camera (102) in a vehicle (100). The luminance characteristic of a headlamp (104) is determined based on the light distribution and a default value for the light distribution. A contrast of the image within the area is determined, where the light distribution of the information on the contrast and a preset value comprises a predetermined contrast value. The brightness within the region of the image is determined. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a device for adjusting a light emitting characteristic of a headlamp to illuminate an environment of a vehicle (2) a computer program comprising a set of instruction for performing a method for adjusting a light emitting characteristic of a headlamp to illuminate environment of a vehicle.
