<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a photonic crystal surface emission laser capable of inclining an emission direction as designed, for stable laser oscillation at a low threshold value, even if it is designed such that the emission angle of an inclination beam is 30° or larger. <P>SOLUTION: The photonic crystal surface emission laser includes an active layer 15 and a photonic crystal layer 14 where a different refractive index region 141 having a refractive index different from that of a plate-like slab 142 is formed, on the slab 142, on lattice points of a first diamond-shaped lattice and a second diamond-shaped lattice in which both diagonal lines are parallel to each other, with only one diagonal line being different in length. a<SB POS="POST">x1</SB>, a<SB POS="POST">x2</SB>, a<SB POS="POST">y</SB>, and n satisfy an inequality below, where a<SB POS="POST">x1</SB>and a<SB POS="POST">y</SB>are lengths of the one diagonal line and the other diagonal line of the first diamond-shaped lattice, a<SB POS="POST">x2</SB>(a<SB POS="POST">x2</SB>≠a<SB POS="POST">x1</SB>) and a<SB POS="POST">y</SB>are lengths of the one diagonal line and the other diagonal line of the second diamond-shaped lattice, and n is an equivalent refractive index of the photonic crystal layer in the direction vertical to the photonic crystal layer. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2013,JPO&INPIT |
