An aircraft having a wingspan comprising a fuselage, a baseline wing that is coupled to the fuselage at a first end of the baseline wing and that has a baseline planform, an aileron, and a winglet. The winglet comprises a horizontal portion 5 coupled to a second end of the baseline wing, such that the horizontal portion is outboard of the baseline wing. The horizontal portion extends the wingspan and substantially conforms to the baseline planform. The winglet further comprises a controllable airflow modification device directly coupled to the horizontal portion of the winglet, inboard of an end of the extended wingspan, and within the planform. 10 The controllable airflow modification device is configured to alleviate a load on a wing and is controllable independently of the aileron. |
