1,255,549. Chlorinating polyethylene. BADISCHE ANILIN- & SODA-FABRIK A.G. 1 May, 1969 [2 May, 1968 (2)], No. 22201/69. Heading C3P. A process for the chlorination of polyethylene of density 0.910 to 0.935 comprises suspending the polyethylene in the form of particles of diameter 50 to 800 microns in a chlorohydrocarbon and treating with chlorine at 5‹ to 30‹ C. Specified media are carbon tetrachloride, chloroform and trichloroethane, and chlorination may be effected in the presence of ultraviolet or high energy radiation or catalysts, e.g. peroxides. The process may be effected continuously by contacting the polyethylene with a solution of chlorine in the chlorohydrocarbon.
