A superconductor coil comprises at least two coaxial series connected disc windings, each winding being made up of a plurality of turns of a composite strip conductor comprising a plurality of filamentary superconductor cores embedded in stabilizing metal connected in parallel at the coil ends but insulated from one another along their lengths, each electrical loop defined by two of the superconductor cores and their mutual end connecting points being arranged so that substantially no net radial magnetic flux links the loop as a whole. This arrangement ensures that when the radial magnetic flux components vary, on energization or de-energization of the coil, substantially no current is induced in the electrical loop. In a first embodiment, Fig. 1 (not shown), a plurality of coaxial disc coils are wound with a composite strip in such a manner that each filament of the strip occupies the same relative position in the turns of each coil, alternate coils are wound from the inside outwards and from the outside inwards, and the alternate coils are wound in opposite directions so that when energized they produce aiding axial magnetic flux components. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), the coils are wound in such a manner that the relative positions of the filaments are transposed in those of the inter coil connections which are located at the outer faces of the coils, except for that connection which crosses the plane of symmetry of the coil. In a second embodiment, the individual stabilized conductors are wound helically round an armouring ribbon to form the composite strip which is then wound to form a plurality of disc coils. As shown, Fig. 5, a plurality of conductors 51, 52, each comprising a filament 50 of superconductor material such as Nb-Zr coated with a sheath 53 of a stabilizing metal such as Cu and insulated by a wrapping 54 of glass fibre are wrapped helically round a non- magnetic steel armouring ribbon 60 provided with oblique grooves 61 to aid coolant penetration. The composite strip is wound to form disc windings together with a further grooved non- magnetic steel ribbon 55. Insulating crosspieces 56 may be arranged between adjacent disc windings to take up axial forces on the coil. The stabilizing metal may also be Al in which case the armouring ribbon may be of an Alalloy. The stabilized conductors may be insulated by means of oxide layers.
