PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an organic electroluminescent element which has high luminous efficiency, a long emission life, and a low driving voltage and exhibits sharp light emission, and to provide a lighting device and a display device provided with the organic electroluminescent element.

SOLUTION: The organic electroluminescent element is characterized in that a light-emitting layer contains an ortho-metal complex represented by general formula (1).
