In this HMD (1), a liquid-crystal holder (17) is moved coaxially with respect to a lens holder (15), making it easy to adjust, in accordance with the visual acuity of the user, the focus of images viewed via a partially-reflective mirror (8). The lens holder (15) and liquid-crystal holder (17) overlap coaxially and are slidably coupled. Foreign matter such as dust can thus be prevented from getting inside the liquid-crystal holder (17), making it possible to prevent such foreign matter from adhering to a liquid-crystal device (101). Also, since said liquid-crystal device (101) is incorporated into the liquid-crystal holder (17) and eyepiece optics (120) are incorporated into the lens holder (15), with said holders overlapping, this HMD (1) can be made compact.
