The process comprises directly performing a desulfurization in a biogas fermenter during an anaerobic fermentation of a biomass in which a buoyant carrier body populated with sulfur-oxidizing microorganisms is introduced into a fermenter porous, forming an artificial functional layer at an interface between a liquid phase and a gas phase, where the functional layer is traversed by the generated biogas during the fermentation so that it is desulfurized in situ, mixing a fermenter content during the process, and introducing air into the gas phase. The process comprises directly performing a desulfurization in a biogas fermenter during an anaerobic fermentation of a biomass in which a buoyant carrier body populated with sulfur-oxidizing microorganisms is introduced into a fermenter porous, forming an artificial functional layer at an interface between a liquid phase and a gas phase, where the functional layer is traversed by the generated biogas during the fermentation so that it is desulfurized in situ, mixing a fermenter content during the process, and introducing air into the gas phase. Hydrophobic biodegradable materials are used as the carrier body. Cereal starch, potato starch or corn starch are used as the biodegradable material. The carrier body: is used as extrudate; and comprises metal compounds such as iron compounds for the chemical sorption of hydrogen sulfide, an anti-foaming agent, pH-value regulating substances and/or nutrients for the sulfur-oxidizing microorganisms, which are chemolithoautotrophic microorganism strains, Acidithiobacillusthiooxidans strain and Acidithiobacillusferrooxidans strains.
