<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a technique capable of preventing disconnection of an EL film and a cathode, suppressing that film thickness of the EL film becomes thin locally at a portion sandwiched between the cathode and an anode, and preventing local concentration of an electric field in the EL film. <P>SOLUTION: An EL element comprises: an insulating film 101 formed on an anode 100; and an EL film 102 and a cathode 103 formed on the insulating film 101. In the EL element, a lower end portion and an upper end portion of the insulating film 101 are formed in curved surface shapes.
