A method for treating steel, galvanized steel, zinc and aluminum sheet and strip with an HF-CrO3 containing solution wherein the solution is applied so that no more than about 50 percent of the applied solution is returned to the treating bath and about 0.1-6 grams/square meter HF and about 0.06-3 grams/square meter CrO3 are retained on the metal surface to give a pickling effect or metal removal of about 0.1 to 2 grams/square meter.
