Enabling a web application to call at least one native function of a mobile device

A remote computer (server 124) executes a web application 134 which can call at least one native function 114 of a mobile device 100. The browser 110 of the mobile device accesses the web application and upon selection of a GUI component in the web application by a user, submits a cross domain HTTP request to the localhost IP address of a TCP/IP socket listener module 112 executing in the mobile device. The listener module can be a local web server and may be written in a cross-platform language. The cross-domain HTTP request can involve the use of an iFrame tag embedded in the HTML code of the web application. The listener module may return the results of the function call together with a session ID 122 to a result collector module 138 which then notifies the web application of the results. The native function may gather biometric data from the user wherein the result collector module determines if the user is authorized to access a security function of the web application.
