A linear actuator 15, for an acoustic vibratory source 10 comprises magnetic circuitry 60 comprising gaps 62, coil assemblies 50 which comprise drive coils 52 wherein the drive coils moves in a linear path in the gaps, a pair of ferromagnetic coil guides (75, fig 2) positioned on either side of the linear path, a ferromagnetic extension (70, fig 2) extending laterally from the drive coils and transmission elements 55 which are coupled to the drive coil. Embodiments may include a fixture 40 capable of suspending the linear actuator 15 within a flextensional shell 20. The drive coil 52 may be coupled to a suitable electrical controller to control the linear actuator. The linear actuator is suitable for use as part of an acoustic vibratory source in marine seismic surveying systems.
