1,260,983. Polyphenyl polyamines and polyisocyanates. UPJOHN CO. 9 June, 1970 [25 July, 1969], No. 27845/70. Heading C2C. Methylene-bridged polyphenyl polyamines, the major component being an (aminophenyl)- .(aminoaryl) methane containing a substantial proportion of o,p<SP>1</SP>-isomer, are prepared by heating at 150-300‹ C. a mixture of (1) an aromatic primary amine and (2) an acid-free mixture of aminobenzylamines (defined as a mixture of N-phenylamine-2- or 4-benzylamine), obtained by condensing aniline with formaldehyde, in a molar ratio preferably at least 2 : 1 and at a temperature of not more than 100‹ C., in the presence of a mineral acid neutralizing the reaction product. Examples of primary aromatic amines are aniline, the toluidines, the xylidines, alkyl anilines, tolylenediamines, diaminodiphenyl, diaminodiphenyl methane, fluoro-, chloro-, bromo- or iodo-anilines, 4-cyanoaniline, 2-nitro-aniline, alkoxyanilines, alkoxyphenylene diamines. The polyamine products act as curing agents for epoxy resins or can be phosgenated to form the corresponding polyisocyanates; in examples 3-methyl-2(or 4),4<SP>1</SP>-diisocyanate diphenyl methane and 3-methyl-2,4,4<SP>1</SP>(or 4,4<SP>1</SP>,6)- triisocyanato diphenyl methane are prepared. |
