Apparatus for printing indicia on documents such as cheques comprises means for conveying the documents past a printing device and a member which, in response to the passage of a document to the printing position, is moved from an inoperative position to a position where it backs up or supports the document as it is being printed. In one embodiment, Fig. 3A, the documents are fed to the printing position 49 by laterally-spaced pairs of belts 23, 25 passing over driven pulleys 19. Between the pairs of belts is mounted, on a support 54, a resilient member 52 having a rounded end 51 projecting into the path of the documents. When a document reaches the member 52 it bends the end 51 upwardly so that the end 51 supports the document and presses a part of it radially outward into engagement with a printing roller 38 spaced from the normal path of the document thereby causing rotation of the roller so that characters 42 are printed on the document. Screw-stops 58, 60 limit the movement of the member 52. After the document has passed the printing position, the member 52 springs back to its original position. In other embodiments (Figs. 4 to 7), a roller, whose axle is movable in slots in fixed supports, normally occupies a position corresponding to the inoperative position of the end 51 under the action of gravity or a spring. When the leading edge of a document engages the roller, the roller is moved to the printing position to support the document in the same manner as the end 51. According to another construction, Fig. 8, the document in its movement deflects fingers 354, 355 on a member 352 to the positions shown dotted. During such deflection, a central finger 358 engages a stop 356 which causes the finger to be deflected to the dotted line position where it presses a part of the document against the printing roller.
