A thermoplastic moulding composition comprising (a) from 60 to 97% by weight of a copolymer of maleic imide, or a N-alkyl or N- cycloalkyl maleic imide, and (b) from 3 to 40% by weight of a rubber having a second order transition temperature according to Roelig (DIN 53 513) of below +10‹ C., the rubber (b) being dispersed in the copolymer (a) in the form of microscopic or submicroscopic particles, may be prepared by (i) converting a maleic anhydride copolymer, by reaction with ammonia, or a primary alkylamine or cycloalkylamine, into a half-amide intermediate, mixing this with the rubber in the form of beads, a granulate or a latex, evaporating any water and converting the half amide into the copolymer (a) by increasing the temperature to more than 100‹ C. or (ii) preparing the rubber by emulsion or bead polymerization in a solution or suspension of the half-imide intermediate, removing any water by drying and converting the intermediate into the copolymer (a) at a temperature above 100‹ C. In the examples the copolymers are prepared by treating an isobutylene or ethylene maleic anhydride copolymer suspended in benzene or toluene with methylamine, ethylamine or ammonia and dispersed in butadieneacrylonitrile copolymer, cross-linked copolymer of methylene bis-acrylamide and butyl acrylate, graft copolymer of styrene and acrylonitrile on polybutadiene, ethylene-propylene-ethinyl norbornene rubber, styrene-butadiene copolymer, styrene-ethyl acrylate-butyl acrylate-methyl methacrylate copolymer, polybutyl acrylate and ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer.
