Laminates usable as fusible interlinings and in garments, floor coverings and upholstery, are produced by adhering with heat and pressure, to or between a backing sheet or sheets, a sheet of thermoplastic material in the form of a non- woven net comprising spaced thicker areas formed by thinner strands. The net may be made as disclosed in Specifications 914,489 or 1,055,963, and be of high density or other polythene or copolymers thereof. On heating the strands may be broken, leaving the thicker areas as spaced adhesive spots. The backing sheets may be of close woven cotton, non-woven fabric, or woven or knitted cellulose acetate, rayon, wool, nylon, polyester, or paper, acrylic or vinyl fibres. Laminating apparatus is described comprising a heated roller around which is passed a backing sheet carrying the thermoplastic net, the latter being compressed and fused into separate beads by an endless apron having a foamed plastic surface. A second backing sheet may be fed into contact with and adhered to, the beaded layer. Alternatively the sheets may be pressed together by being passed around the roller under tension. Heat may be supplied by jets of hot air or steam. Apparatus as above may be integrated with apparatus for making the thermoplastic net by extrusion, embossing, and longitudinal and lateral stretching. |
