A tool, e.g. a radial arm saw 11, Fig. 1, has an arm 41 on which a carriage 43 is slidably supported for movement along the arm, a tool means, e.g. a circular saw 85, suspended from the carriage, and manually operable clamping means on said carriage adapted to clamp the carriage to the arm, the arrangement being such that the reaction forces on the carriage to the clamping forces on the arm are equalized in a direction transverse to the arm. In the saw described the arm 41, Fig. 2, has tracks 57, 59 and the carriage has tracks 61, 63. Balls 45, 47 supported by a shroud 53 run in the tracks to provide for relative movement of the carriage and arm. The carriage has mounted therein a pair of slidable gibs 101, 103 which can be urged together against the arm 41 by rotation of a knob 119 on a threaded bolt 117, to clamp the carriage to the arm. The saw blade 85 is supported from a yoke 69, Fig. 1, which is pivotally mounted on the carriage 43, and the position of the yoke relative to the carriage is established by engagement of a spring-loaded detent in one of two holes in the carriage. In one position the saw blade is adapted for cross-cutting in which case the carriage is movable along the arm, and in the other position the saw blade is at 90 degrees to the Fig. 1 position, the carriage is clamped to the arm, and ripping may be performed.
