A method of forming a compression joint between a tubular metal ferrule (not shown) which may be internally threaded, and a stranded or solid cable inserted therein, comprises compressing the ferrule between a support 3 and a punch 8 which has a flat end and a series of steps (not shown in Fig. 1) normal or substantially normal to the direction of punchmovement, the sides of the punch between the steps being tapered towards the flat end. The punch may be of circular cross-section, Fig. 2, square or oblong, Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown), with the steps extending only along the long sides or along all sides. An hydraulic piston 6 for moving the punch against a stop 7 operates in a cylinder 4 integral with or attached to a frame 1. |
