PURPOSE: An apparatus and a method for controlling the focus balance of an optical disc drive are provided to improve data recording quality. CONSTITUTION: A control unit detects a first and a second focus balance adjustment value(S11,S13). The control unit detects a third focus balance adjustment value between the first and the second focus balance adjustment value(S15). The control unit sets up an optimal focus balance adjustment value as a focus balance adjustment value which precedes the third balance adjustment value with one step or two step(S19).
