1,270,722. Mixing apparatus. JOY MFG. CO. 16 April, 1969 [29 April, 1968], No. 19427/69. Heading B1C. [Also in Divisions B8 and F4] A rotary heat exchange element comprises a stem pipe 22 about which is helically wound an element 32 with a gap between adjacent turns. The element 32 is anchored at both ends to the pipe 22 but is otherwise loose thereon. A hollow helical element 40 with face and back flights 42, 44 is mounted on the element 32 so as to bridge the gap between the turns in fluid-tight manner. Heat exchange fluid can circulate through pipe 46, base 36, the element 40, base 37 and pipe 27. Intermeshing left- and right-hand elements as described above may be used in material processing apparatus, Fig. 1 (not shown). In an alternative construction, (not shown), the helically wound element 32 is replaced by a series of spaced tubular collars, hollow flight elements bridging the gaps in fluid-tight manner. In a further construction, (not shown), discrete screw segments of approximately one turn with gaps between the segments, as disclosed in Specification 1,259,509, may be mounted on the element 32 with bridging pieces between the segments over the uncovered portions of the gap between the turns.
