PURPOSE: A projection type displaying device and a control method for the same are provided to allow a color shading of images as a range of change for a second light exposure rate of an illuminating mechanism is narrowed. CONSTITUTION: A projection type displaying device(100) comprises a light source(10), liquid crystal light valves(30R,30G,30B), an illuminating unit(20), a control unit, a light source driving unit, and an illuminating unit driving unit. The light source includes a high-pressure mercury lamp(11). The liquid crystal light valve modulates incident lights. The illuminating unit is installed between the light source and liquid crystal light valves and mechanically shields the lights from the light source. A projecting unit projects the lights from the liquid crystal light valves. The control unit determines an incident light amount incident to the liquid crystal light valves based on input image signals. The control unit outputs output image signals in which the input image signals are extended according to the incident light amount to the liquid crystal light valves. The control unit executes and processes in order to determine the dimming rate for a negative rate of a second photosensitive rate for a high pressurized mercury lamp, the first sensing rate and on the basis of an incident light.
