Disclosed is an apparatus for positioning and retaining a carcase support device, preferably a gambrel. The apparatus includes a retaining device, an actuator (11), and a redirecting portion (13a). The retaining device includes at least one upper retaining member (13) and at least one lower retaining member (17). In use, the redirecting portion redirects the carcase support device in a predetermined orientation prior to the carcase support device being clamped between the at least one upper retaining member and the at least one lower retaining member upon activation of the actuator.
