PURPOSE: A cascade type heat pump system and a method for controlling the same are provided to immediately generate the water of high temperature for heating or supplying hot water and to maximize spatial utilization as separate water heating equipment is not necessary. CONSTITUTION: A cascade type heat pump system comprises includes a first heat pump unit(100), a second heat pump unit(200), a cooling-and-heating unit(300), and a hot water supplying unit(400). The cooling-and-heating unit includes a heat storage tank(310) and a second fluid line for cooling and heating. The hot water supplying unit includes a first heat exchanger for a hot water supply and a second heat exchanger for the hot water supply. The hot water supplying unit makes a second fluid selectively flow into the first heat exchanger or the second heat exchanger.
