<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal optical modulator with a flexible structure having a wide operation temperature range, high responsivity, and wide viewing angle characteristics, and to provide a liquid crystal display device. <P>SOLUTION: A blue phase liquid crystal layer 1 having a blue phase developing temperature range expanded by adding a chiral agent to a terphenyl based nematic liquid crystal 12, is held between two flexible substrates 3a and 3b via spacers 4 formed by a roller type nano-imprint method or a photopolymerization phase separation method, and then the two substrates 3a and 3b are bonded and fixed. When a molecular oriented polymer network is formed by adding a monomer to the blue phase liquid crystal, a substrate interval is stabilized and the blue phase developing temperature range can be expanded. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2013,JPO&INPIT |
