<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve such a problem that a retardation plate has a trouble in dimensional stability, heat resistance and adhesion which do not cause any trouble in a retardation plate made of a glass substrate. <P>SOLUTION: A retardation plate includes: a transparent substrate; an alignment layer which is formed on one surface of the substrate, has patterns in the alignment direction periodically arrayed in the direction along the main surface of the substrate, and contains a polymer having anisotropy; and a liquid crystal layer containing liquid crystal periodically aligned in compliance with the alignment direction of the alignment layer.
