<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a soil characteristic measuring apparatus tha can cut roots of tee trees under ground with cutting means as necessary during excavation of soil between ribs with diggers, thereby activating the subsequent growth of tee trees to increase yield. <P>SOLUTION: A soil characteristic measuring apparatus 1 is equipped with a pair of left and right digging bodies 12, 12 provided on the front side in the moving direction in a vehicle frame 6, and cutting means 32 mounted on each of the bottom face of the digging bodies 12, 12. Soil can be excavated by lowering the digging bodies 12, 12 and moving them forward in the state that they are inserted in the earth between ribs 4 of a tea plantation. In this case, roots of tea trees spreading in the earth between the ribs 4 are cut by cutting members 31 of the cutting means 32.
