The vehicle bumper assembly (1) has a bumper and two energy absorption components (3) arranged at a distance from one another at a back of the bumper. The energy absorption components are formed and connected such that an energy to be absorbed is introduced in one portion of a cross-sectional area of the energy absorption components during an initial phase of an energy absorption process. The effective cross-sectional area of the energy absorption components gradually increases to reach a maximum cross-sectional area with continued force. An independent claim is included for a method for absorbing an impact energy acting on a bumper of a vehicle.
