<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of and system for authorizing purchases made over a computer network using an ATM card or the like. <P>SOLUTION: A consumer 12 transmits an ATM card number over a network 24 to an on-line merchant 16. The on-line merchant 16 then electronically forwards the ATM card number to a third party contractor 20. The third party contractor 20 determines an authentication token type and electronically prompts the consumer to the appropriate type of authentication token. The consumer 12 then inputs the authentication token and electronically transmits the authentication token over the network to the third party contractor 20, bypassing the on-line merchant 16. Having both the ATM card number and the authentication token, the third party contractor 20 verifies that the ATM card number and the authentication token are valid, checks for sufficiency of funds, and either authorizes or denies the transaction. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2013,JPO&INPIT |
