In a system for programmed control of a machine tool for removal of material from a workpiece, the material removing rate Pz is derived from the speed and torque of the tool or workpiece and the feed velocity Vz is controlled in one direction of movement of the tool or workpiece in dependence upon the material removing rate. A feed velocity Vx is controlled in a direction perpendicular to the one direction in dependence upon the feed velocity Vz and the derivative dP z/dt.
