<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an engine control system of a work machine that correctly measures sulfur content in exhaust gas which is harmful in an exhaust gas post-treatment device in normal operation, and reduces sulfur poisoning of the exhaust gas post-treatment device. <P>SOLUTION: At every engine start-up where a key switch 46 is turned on, a fuel residual amount stored at previous engine stop is compared with a fuel residual amount detected at current engine start, and sulfur content measurement processing is performed only when the fuel residual amount increases. In the processing, the rotating speed of an engine 1 is forcibly fixed at a target rotating speed Na which is suitable for measuring the sulfur content. The temperature of the exhaust gas is in a predetermined temperature range of Texa-Texb suitable for measuring the sulfur content. When a target time Ta has passed, a determination is made as to whether the sulfur content is equal to or higher than a threshold.
