Acetic acid is produced by gas phase oxidn with O2 or air of propylene and/or n-butene in the presence of a catalyst consisting of oxides of V, W and Sn in atomic ratios for V:W=1.0:0.2-1.0; V:W:Sn=1.0:0.2-1:0.2-1.0. The catalyst may be distributed on a carrier e.g. Al2O3 kieselguhr etc. A mixture of the hydrocarbon gases O2 or air and steam (which accelerates the oxidn) in the ratio for n-butene of 1 (n-butene):10(steam):39 (air) is passed through the catalyst bed at pref. 200-250 degrees. The main product is acetic acid with traces of maleic anhydride and small amts. of acetaldehyde and acrolein.
