<p>Provided are an external storage device and a method for controlling an external storage device whereby accidental deletion of, and tampering with, information in the storage means can be prevented, and functional data specific to a vendor can be received quickly. The external storage device is characterized in comprising a storage means in which a storage area can be defined as at least two areas, an interface means for receiving information between a computer and the storage means, and a control means for controlling the storage means and the interface means, the control means performing control so that the first area of the storage means is treated as a DVD-ROM emulation area, and the second area of the storage means being treated as an encrypted hidden area that cannot be recognized by the computer.</p> |
