<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To precisely detect the presence of fault in a switch unit in a parallel circuit composed of a voltage boosting unit and the switch unit connected in parallel to a power supply. <P>SOLUTION: A control ECU 34 has an open fault detection mode in which an open fault of a directly coupled switch 13 is determined if an output side voltage is detected to be boosted on the basis of an input side voltage and the output side voltage detected by first and second voltage sensors 15 and 16 on the output of a control pulse instructing turning-on of the directly coupled switch 13 and a boosting operation of a voltage boosting circuit 14. The control ECU 34 also has a short fault detection mode in which a short fault of the directly coupled switch 13 or a fault of the voltage boosting circuit 14 is determined if the output side voltage is detected not to be boosted on the output of a control pulse instructing turning-off of the directly coupled switch 13 and the boosting operation of the voltage boosting circuit 14.
