The present invention is a communication system in which a mobile terminal device (10) and a base station device (20) communicate using a basic carrier and an expansion carrier assigned in addition to the basic carrier, and is characterized by the base station device being equipped with the following: a configuration unit (310) that configures, as expansion carriers, existing carrier type sub-frames receivable by a plurality of mobile terminal devices having different capabilities and additional carrier type sub-frames receivable by a portion of the plurality of mobile terminal devices; and a transmission unit (203) that sends to the mobile terminal devices the basic carrier and expansion carriers. The communication system is further characterized by the mobile terminal devices being equipped with a reception unit (103) that receives the basic carrier and expansion carriers from the base station device.
