1282658 Stabilizing polymers MERCK PATENT GmbH 13 April 1970 [23 July 1969] 17378/70 Heading C3P [Also in Division C5] Polymers are stabilized against thermal and/or oxidative degradation by incorporating therein a compound of formula in which R 1 is C 1-18 alkyl or C 2-18 alkanoyl; R 2 is H or C 1-9 alkyl, alkoxy or alkanoyl, optionally substituted with Ar; R 3 and R 5 are H or C 1-6 alkyl; R 4 is H, Ar, Ar-oxy, Ar-thio or C 1-18 alkyl, alkoxy, alkanoyloxy or carbalkoxy optionally substituted with one or more Ar; R 6 is H, C 1-6 alkyl, alkoxy or alkanoyloxy, or a cyclopentyl or cyclohexyl group which may be substituted with a C 1-3 alkyl group; and Ar is phenyl which may be substituted with C 1-18 alkyl, alkoxy, alkanoyloxy or carbalkoxy, or a cyclopentyl or cyclohexyl group which may be C 1-3 alkyl substituted; provided that no aromatic ring bears more than one t-butyl group, and that R 1 is not alkyl if R 2 -R 6 are H or if R 4 is unsubstituted benzyl, or if R 4 is alkoxy and R 2 , R 3 , R 5 and R 6 are H. The polymer may be a polyethylene, polypropylene, polystyrene, polyvinyl chloride, polyester, polyether, polyacetal, polyamide or copolymer of butadiene with styrene, acrylonitrile or isobutylene, natural rubber, polybutadiene or polyisoprene. Many suitable stabilizers are listed and examples describe the stabilizing of polyethylene with 4 - nonylanisole, 4 - t - butylphenyl - n - butylether, 2- (or 3-) t - butyl-4- n - butoxyanisole, 2- (or 3-) t - butyl - 4 - trimethylacetoxyanisole, 4,41 - dimethoxybiphenyl, 4,41 - diacetoxybiphenyl, bis - (2- methoxy- 4 - ethyl - 6 - t - butylphenyl) methane, bis - (2 - acetoxy - 4 - ethyl - 6 - t - butylphenyl) methane, bis - (2 - methoxy - 3 - (2 - methylcyclohexyl) - 5 - methylphenyl) methane, 2,2- bis - (4 - n - butoxyphenyl) propane, 1,1-bis- (2 - methyl - 4 - acetoxy - 5 - t - butylphenyl) butane, 1,1 - bis - (2 - methyl - 4 - methoxy-5-tbutylphenyl) butane, 1,1,3 - tris - (2 - methyl-4- methoxy - 5 - t - butylphenyl) butane and bis- (2 - methyl - 4 - methoxy - 5 - t - butylphenyl) sulphide.
