1353609 Coated sheet material NAIRN-WILLIAMSON Ltd 27 May 1971 [9 June 1970] 27904/70 Heading B2E Sheet material has a fabric base substantially free of any continuous matrix of polymeric impregnant and a thermoplastic coating including a polyurethane surface layer having a suede-like appearance, and having a barrier layer of polymeric material interposed between the fabric and the coating, the material of the barrier layer being such that the layer does not flow when the thermoplastic coating is in a fluid condition during manufacture of the sheet material. The fabric may be impregnated with a foamed polymer. Preferably, to preserve the draping qualities and handle the fabric, an open layer may be present between the barrier layer and the fabric. This may take the form of a thin layer of flexible foam or fibres held to the fabric base and the barrier layer held to the fabric by these fibres being embedded in it. The fabric may be a woven cotton cloth, a knitted cotton fabric or a fabric of knitted nylon. Non-woven fabrics of cotton, polyamide or polyester fibre may also be used. Suitable materials for the barrier layer may be crosslinked cured nitrile rubber, cross-linked acrylic polymer or of both cured nitrile rubber and cross-linked acrylic polymer. The barrier layer is preferably applied by transfer coating from a release paper. The thermoplastic coating may be applied and bonded to the barrier layer before embossing or it may be extruded as a melt between the barrier layer and a mould surface immediately prior to the embossing step. The thermoplastic coating is normally entirely of polyurethane or a thermoplastic material such as polyvinyl chloride may be present. |
