1283620 Making wire BRUNSWICK CORP 1 April 1970 [1 April 1969] 15531/70 Heading B3A A method of forming filaments includes the steps of sheathing a wire with a material differing from that of the wire, assembling a bundle of the sheathed wires and enclosing the bundle in a cladding strip, constricting the clad bundle, e.g. by drawing, to cause the wires in the bundle to have a filamentary diameter, and removing the sheathing and cladding material. As described, a strip 12 of Monel (Registered Trade Mark) metal is continuously longitudinally formed about a stainless steel wire 11 as shown in Fig. 2, the abutting edges 31, 32 of the strip being joined by a weld 33 extending less than fully through the thickness of the formed strip. The sheathed wire 11, 12 is then cleaned, annealed, cleaned and boraxed and reduced by cold drawing, these operations being repeated until the sheathed wire reaches its desired diameter. A plurality of the reduced sheathed wires 83 (Fig. 4b) are then fed from a rack 84 through a bushing device 92 to a cladding and welding station 96 where a strip 87 is formed around the bundle 93 in the same way as the sheath 12 is formed around the wire 11. The clad bundle 100 is then cleaned, annealed, cleaned and boraxed and reduced by cold drawing, these operations being repeated until the wires have a filamentary diameter. Alternatively, a plurality of the reduced clad bundles may be further reduced by passing them through the same apparatus again in place of the sheathed wires 83. The sheathing and cladding material is then removed, e.g. by leaching in nitric acid, to leave a tow of metallic filaments. In a modification (not shown) a plurality of unsheathed wires are assembled in a bundle and a lubricant is sprayed on to the bundle during cladding, the lubricant forming a matrix which separates the individual wires in the bundle. |
