A magnetically blown surge arrester is comprised of a plurality of superposed arc chambers each including a pair of spaced horns providing a sparkover gap. The horns of a lower chamber are provided with projections which extend into the chamber next-above that are contacted by the arc as it is blown after being struck between the horns of the latter chamber, and the arc is then struck between the horns in the lower chamber following a passage of charge carriers from the upper to the lower chamber.
