Disclosed is a novel process for the preparation of oximes and hydroximoyl halides, comprising reacting nitrosyl chloride with ketene in an essentially 1:1 molar ratio at a temperature below about 50 DEG C. and then adding water or an aliphatic alcohol in excess of that required to convert the intermediate to an oxime having the general formula HON=CHCO2R where R is hydrogen or an aliphatic radical. The oxime can be treated with a halogen to prepare a hydroximoyl halide having the general formula WHERE R is as defined above and X is chlorine, bromine or iodine.
