PURPOSE: A device for detecting an underwater mine and a method thereof are provided to accurately detect an underwater mine by determining an underwater target as the underwater mine when both location information and target strength obtained according to a distance are in a predetermined range. CONSTITUTION: A device for detecting an underwater mine includes a sonar device(110), a tracking unit(120), a calculating unit(130), and a determining unit(140). The sonar device obtains target information about an underwater target. The tracking unit tracks the target by using location information included in the target information obtained according to the movement of a surface ship. The calculating unit calculates target strength by using signal strength included in the target information. The determining unit determines the target as the underwater mine when the target strength corresponds to reference target strength.
