A compressed air energy storage (CAES) system comprises at least two stages of compression for compressing an air supply. A storage vessel 6 is provided for storing the compressed air. One of the stages of compression further comprises a turbine derivative compressor 1. The CAES may be an adiabatic compressed air energy storage (ACAES) system, comprising a thermal energy storage (TES) unit 2 operable to extract thermal energy from the air after compression and wherein the storage vessel may be arranged for storing the compressed air after it has passed through the TES. The gas turbine derivative compressor may be operable to perform a first stage of at least two stages of compression, and a non gas turbine derivative compressor may be operable to perform at least one subsequent stage of compression. Variable inlet guide vanes may be arranged in the gas turbine derivative compressor and a temperature controlling device may be arranged at the inlet of the gas turbine derivative compressor.
