<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce a bending load acting on an actuator rod of a variable compression ratio mechanism and to improve controllability of a compression ratio. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The variable compression ratio mechanism includes links 3, 4, a control shaft 7, a control link 5, and a driver of the control shaft 7. The driver includes a connecting link 12, an actuator rod 13 connected thereto, and a controller 19 for reciprocating the actuator rod 13. Upon defining that a radial component and an axial component of a load acting from the connecting link 12 to the actuator rod 13 are F1, F2, respectively, a load acting on an eccentric shaft of the control shaft 7 from the control link 5 is F3, and torque acting around the center of the control shaft 7 by the load F3 is control shaft torque, the controller is configured such that a ratio of the load F1 to the load F2 at a compression ratio when the control shaft torque reaches the maximum will be nearly minimum.
