PURPOSE: A method for preparing a kelp root extract and a composition containing the extract are provided to effectively extract useful ingredients from kelp roots and to treat constipation. CONSTITUTION: A method for preparing a kelp root extract comprises: a step of washing and drying kelp roots; a step of cutting and pulverizing the dried kelp roots and sorting by each size; a step of adding an organic acid solution and extracting the pulverized kelp roots; and a step of filtering the extract. The method also comprises a step concentrating the extract. The organic acid includes citric acid, malic acid, acetic acid, or a mixture thereof. The organic acid solution contains 0.05-0.5 wt% of organic acid and 99.5-99.95 wt% of water. A composition for treating constipation contains the extract as an active ingredient.
