PURPOSE: An extract of Cynanchum paniculatum kitagawa or a compound thereof is provided to have a protection effect for nerve cells without side effects. CONSTITUTION: A compound or pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof has a structure indicated in following chemical formula (I). The compound is derived from Cynanchum paniculatum kitagawa. A composition for preventing or treating neurodegenerative disease comprises the extract of Cynanchum paniculatum kitagawa which comprises the compound, fraction of the extract, the compound and a pharmaceutically acceptable slat as active ingredients. The composition additionally comprises a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier.
