Improvements in four corner box staying machines

Feeding webs.-Stay strips are applied simultameously to the four corners of a folded box by rod-operated pressing-elements actuated electrically, magnetically, or by fluid pressure. The stay strips are applied to the box corners by pressing-elements 11, Fig. 1, actuated by plungers 8 connected to the armatures of solenoids carried on brackets 5 connected diagonally in pairs by arms 2a, 3a rotatable about the vertical axis of the box form 13 so as to be adjustable for different sizes of box. The stay strips are fed from rolls 61 supported from the machine frame, and pass over moistening or gumming rolls 63 to feed-rolls 38, which are actuated to feed predetermined lengths of strip, and also to move the strip towards the box form during part of the stroke of the pressing-elements 11 by the following arrangement. As seen in Fig. 7, the plunger 8 connects by means of a tooth 71 with a spring tooth 70 carried by a slidable bracket 37 which supports the feed-roll 38 so that when the presser 11 moves to the left the feed-roll 38 is carried with it until a stud 73 contacts with the machine frame, when the spring tooth 70 disengages from the tooth 71, the latter yielding downwards, so that the bracket 37 comes to rest. Simultaneously the feed-roll 38 is rotated to feed the desired length of strip by a cord 46 passing round and secured to a pulley 45 connected by a one-way clutch 57 to the feed-roll, the other end of the cord being secured at an adjustable point to an element 48 pivoted at 49 to the solenoid casing 6 and connected at 53 to the plunger 8 so as to be oscillated, the connection at 53 being automatically broken at substantially the same time that the bracket 37 comes to rest. The desired length of strip is thus fed forwards and is severed by the relative movement between the side of the bracket 37 and the presser 11, after the bracket 37 has come to rest, by a knife-plate 76 moving with the bracket 37. In a modified arrangement, sbown in Fig. 21, the stay strip is fed intermittently in predetermined lengths from a roll 149 over rollers 152, 145 by means of a plunger 133 of adjustable stroke, which connects at 138 with a belt that operates the roller 145 through a one-way clutch. Cutting of the strip is effected by a second plunger 131 actuated at the end of the stroke of the plunger 133, the strip being severed at a knife plate 158 as the presser 134 moves past it.
