A multi-core optical fiber comprises a plurality of core units, and a cladding unit which is located in the external periphery of the plurality of core units and which has a lower refraction than the maximum refraction of each of the core units. Each of the core units propagates light only in two or more of a prescribed number of propagation modes, and the effective core cross-section area at a wavelength of 1550nmin each propagation mode is 120µm2 or more. The preferred prescribed number is 2. Thus, a multi-core optical fiber and an optical transmission system are provided with which it is possible to increase transmission capacity over conventional systems. |
