A magnetic recording and reproducing apparatus capable of recording and reproducing magnetic tapes accommodated in magnetic tape containers of different shapes, i.e., in both a tape cassette in which a tape is sent from one reel to another and an endless cartridge, which are selectively inserted into the apparatus.
