PURPOSE: A method and an apparatus for detecting a vehicle first apply simple characteristics which show the general characteristic of the vehicle to learning, and then apply characteristics of high accuracy expressing detailed information of the vehicle from detected candidate vehicles to the learning. CONSTITUTION: By the usage of the first algorithm, vehicle area candidates showing vehicle form are detected from an image in which photographed vehicle detection apparatus(S120). For the detection of the vehicle area candidates, at least one of rectangle formed haar-wavelet characteristic is learned through the first algorithm. By the usage of the second algorithm, the apparatus detects a final vehicle area from the vehicle area candidates(S130). In the detection of the final vehicle area, at least one of simple characteristic from the detected vehicle area candidates is learned through the second algorithm.
