The device has a tube (2), which is filled with a filling medium (3) and has two opposite ends. The filling medium has excess pressure against the ambient pressure in an intended normal condition, in which no impact of an object exists on the device. The excess pressure is provided as a signal from one of the pressure sensors (1a,1b) of a processing unit (5), which evaluates the level of excess pressure for diagnosing the reliability of the device. An independent claim is included for a method for checking a device for detecting the collision of an object to a vehicle.
